While I have realistic expectations of myself regarding housework and how much time I am willing to devote to said tasks, I did like the house to be clean. Yet, I wasn't always focused on having the house 'picked up'. So with two children and working part-time and a husband who was away a lot - and then as a single mom - I set my priority which was quality time with my children. So, the rule of the house was to pick up as we could, but that was followed by a secondary rule which depended on who the 'visitor' or company was. Years later when my daugher was an adult, she shared that she could always tell if the person was a good friend...  because the house was 'ok' as it was. If it was the grandparents or other company, we had to rush around to pick-up all the rooms where the visitor might go.

As a momhelmed mom, I did have to make choices and that one house rule was clearly aligned with how I handled those momwhelmed decisions about what was most important to me. And it worked!

My mom still remembers the time I called and asked if she could pick up my son from elementary school, because my SUV was full. At the time, I was working as Director for a local preschool; serving as PTA Vice President; and doing marketing and coordinating training classes for Healing Touch for Animals. Truly, a momwhelmed life!

I can still picture that day: It was almost time to pick up my son, only to realize that my car was jam-packed full of stuff for events I was working on for both schools AND with things still not unloaded from the past weekend's training class. There was not one square inch anwyhere for him to sit.

Luckily, I can laugh at myself now! My son is almost 16 and we still have to last-minute rush to unpack our car from whatever events we’ve attended or been just too tired to unload the car… which happens wayyy too often to this day. Still living the momwhelmed life!
