It was a birthday celebration for my mother, when my children were in elementary school. As my parents were due any moment, my son ran to tell me that our dog, Casey (a wonderful golden retriever) had just licked the cake. My heart sank as I went to review the damage. The good news? It was just one side that had been licked. The rest was intact and untouched. I marked that part, did a few icing swirls with a knife so it looked like the rest of the cake and turned the cake around...swearing my kids to secrecy and promising that no one would eat that part of the cake EVER. The birthday party was great, the cake was a hit and my children never shared that near 'tragedy'. Well, at least to their grandparents. They reminded me of it years later. A clear mind in a panicky moment and my kids not daring to telll or laugh or smirk at cake time...saved the day, the birthday cake and - best of all - my parents never found out. In a perfect world...I would have ditched the cake. But as a momwhelmed mom...

My teenager and I were driving on the highway to my mom's house (an hour away and over a huge bridge) when I heard a strange clicking noise. I had been a little worried about the way my older car had been running. So, when I heard a strange, loud ‘click-click-click’, I turned off the radio and told my son to hush so I could listen. We both started to worry and I considered finding a place to pull over to check out the noise until… I suddenly remembered we had the game Scattegories in the back seat. I realized the game box must have gotten pushed against the back of the seat, setting off the game timer inside that box. When playing the game, it goes off regularly and then stops. Then starts again. This timer had just enough break in between clicks to make it sound like something was really wrong with my car.

It was at least a minute before I could stop laughing long enough to explain to my very confused and worried son what was causing that noise. I’ll take a momwhelm moment over a car repair bill any day.
